The Benefits of a Hard Water Filter System

If you’ve been looking into water purification systems and thinking about adding one to your home, there are a few things you should know about why they’re important to have in your home and what exactly they do for you. When minerals are dissolved in your water, it becomes known as “hard.” Typically the minerals that are found in your tap water are a combination of Magnesium and Calcium. Normally, the number of minerals that are found in your water are described as “grains per gallon.” The amount of hardness can change in every sample that’s taken. For example, if your sample is shown to have five grains per gallon once all of the minerals were pulled out and put together the collective hardness would be about the same size as an aspirin. As technology and research advanced there became a new way to describe the hardness of water, and that was in parts per million or milligrams per liter. In conversions, one grain of hardness is the same as 17.1 parts per million. Water is described as soft when the water has less than one grain of hardness. Anything with more than one grain of hardness is automatically considered “slightly hard” to “hard.” The range for slightly hard is 1.0 to 3.5 grains per gallon, moderately hard ranges from 3.5-7.0 grains per gallon, hard is 7.0 to 10.5 grains per gallon, and finally very hard is anything 10.5 grains per gallon or above. Any water that has been treated by a filter system whether it’s a water softener, reverse osmosis, or a distiller will be considered soft. Not only is hard water terrible for drinking it also affects other aspects of your home. Hardness is water can prevent soap from lathering; it reduces the effectiveness of dishwasher and laundry detergents. Finally, it can cause crusty scum and buildup. This happens because the extra minerals that are in water can’t stay dissolved. Because of this, homeowners who have hard water end up using more soap and detergent when washing dishes and clothes. Also, the hard water ends up affecting your appliances, dishwasher, water heater, washers, showers, and faucets, don’t last as long as they should or would if you had soft water coming into your home.
